Where do your clothes go when you give them to charity? About 10 to 20 percent of the clothing donated gets sold. The rest very often turn into a bale and shipped to places like Accra, Ghana. Accra is home to Kantamanto market, probably the world’s largest secondhand market. Forty percent of the clothes that don’t end up getting sold or repurposed in Kantamanto become waste and are taken to landfill, informal dumping grounds, or burn piles, or are put in the sea.
